Wrestling Should Be Given More Attention in High School/College
There are numerous sports that a student can join in highschool, but there is one sport that separates itself from the rest; this sport, without a doubt, is wresting. Wrestling is an outstanding sport because it teaches discipline, tenacity, and the values of friendship. Unlike most sports such as basketball, football, baseball, etc. wrestling has no pro league other than the Olympics, therefore wrestling should be given more attention in highschool and college.
The only way to succeed in this sport is with discipline. Wrestling far exceeds the practice times and schedules of football, which is thought to be the "toughest" sport. Wrestlers must stay in shape and have a very low body fat percentage. A wrestling practice can start with a five mile jog followed by a thirty minute session of running up stairs, and carrying people on their backs. Afterwards, the wrestler would engage in a full practice of drills, learning new moves, and going "Live". Live is not quite drilling but not as intense as a real match. It allows wrestlers to see what will happen when they try new moves and counters in a sort of "practice" match. Also ending with hitting the weight room hard. Not many people are physically and mentally fit for this kind of practice. Only a select few can cope with it without giving up.
There are many other aspects of the sport that not many of the participants can overcome. One of these would be that when anyone hears the word "wrestling", they would think of a gay sport. These people could not be more wrong. Many of the moves require grabbing the inner thigh or lying on top of the opponent, but this does not mean the sport is gay. This sport measures a man's brute strength and skill in the most intense way and has been in the olympics since the olympics were founded along with track and javelin in 708 B.C.. the olympics were founded to measure a person's capability and wrestling being as hard as it is does just that. Matches are paired up with wrestlers equal in weight so that no one has an advantage in weight.
Among all the difficult tasks a wrestler has to perform maintaining his weight is probably one of the hardest. A wrestler might eat a piece of fruit for breakfast, skip lunch or have a few crackers and a couple sips out of a bottle of Gatorade or PowerAde just to absorb the electrolytes needed to have energy for the next practice, and maybe have a bagel, a salad, or a Power Bar for dinner. If he is underweight, then he can have a sandwich or something that resembles an actual meal. Having this much self discipline is another reason wrestling should be given more attention in high school and college. Take any other person and tell them to eat little to nothing and have two, two hour practices a day why do wrestlers do this? it is because they love the sport and would do anything for a state championship or olympic gold.
If there was no wrestling in high school some kids including myself would not be able to behave as easily or focus in school. Wrestling for some kids is like a stress reliever, you can go out on the matt for six minutes and kick the crap out of someone and not get in trouble for it and for these teenagers it can help them learn valuable life skills including discipline, dedication, sacrifice, hard work, responsibility, accountability and service. For all these reasons i think wrestling should be given more attention in high school and college.
